Best dressed at the Oscars

Assuming my own invitation to the Dolby Theatre got lost in the mail, I spent Sunday evening tweeting the red carpet happenings of the 86th Annual Academy Awards from my couch. The often contrasting style opinions of those in the Twitterverse mixed in with one universally agreed upon theme—timeless neutrals. As opposed to the bold colors of the Golden Globes, the Oscars featured tons of classic white, black, blush and navy, with the very occasional pop of color.

I fell in love early in the night, and the plunging neck and original color of Lupita Nyong'o’s custom Prada gown easily won my designation for Best Dressed. After commenting on the red carpet that the pale blue color reminded her of her Kenyan home, #NairobiBlue immediately started trending on Twitter. She accessorized with Fred Leighton jewels and, later in the evening, a golden statuette for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

Some other favorites from the night:

Most Unique Details

Anna Kendrick in J. Mendel - The strappy back of this dress was a huge standout on the red carpet, but the mesh and beaded detailing also added interest to Anna's black dress.

Naomi Watts in Calvin Klein Collection - The dress is beautiful, but the most unexpected part was the Bulgari necklace paired with the high neck of the gown.

Jennifer Lawrence in Dior Couture - After a literal trip down the red carpet, Jennifer stunned in a red peplum dress and a backwards (again!) Neil Lane necklace.

Julia Roberts in Givenchy Haute Couture - Nominated for her fourth time, Ms. Roberts chose a lacey black peplum gown and Bulgari jewels.

Dressing up the Bump

Olivia Wilde in Valentino - Expecting with fiancé, Jason Sudekis, Olivia decorated her baby bump in a black and white gown and Lorraine Schwartz jewelry.

Kerry Washington in Jason Wu - Making dressing for two look easy, our favorite scandal maker dressed in a muted lavender gown by first-time Oscars designer (and Michelle Obama inaugural fave) Jason Wu.

Not-so-basic Black

Charlize Theron in Dior - Always a red carpet winner, Charlize Theron donned a black mermaid gown, Harry Winston jewels and Christian Louboutin heels.

Anne Hathaway in Gucci - The onetime Oscars co-host chose a mirrored bodice halter dress that sparkled brightly under the stage lights when she presented the Best Supporting Actor award to Jared Leto.

Winter White

Kate Hudson in Versace - Attending with mom, Goldie Hawn, and stepfather, Kurt Russell, Kate wore a deep neckline and removed her cape for the ceremony.

Kristin Bell in Roberto Cavalli - After proudly announcing on Twitter that she had a burrito tucked away in her Salvatore Ferragamo clutch, Kristin easily won best accessory of the night.

Joining the Navy

Amy Adams in Gucci - Some were disappointed in the American Hustle star's conservative gown, but the fit was spot-on.

Sandra Bullock in Alexander McQueen - A seemingly ageless Ms. Bullock accessorized with Lorraine Schwartz earrings and bracelet.

Evening Blushes

Cate Blanchett in Giorgio Armani - The Best Actress in a Leading Role winner stunned on the red carpet with an Armani Prive dress, Roger Vivier shoes and Chopard jewelry.

Camilla Alves in Gabriela Cadena - Otherwise known as Mrs. McConaughey, Camilla wore the most popular shade of the night.

Dynamite Divas

Meryl Streep in Lanvin - Best known for stocking up Academy Awards nominations (a record eighteen in her career!), Meryl stunned in a two-tone dress by designer Lanvin.

Bette Midler in Reem Acra - On hand to perform her signature hit, Wind Beneath My Wings, the Divine Ms. M accessorized with Brian Atwood shoes and Lorraine Schwartz jewelry.

Imitating Oscar

Angelina Jolie in Elie Saab Haute Couture - Angelina dazzled in a metallic golden gown and accessorized with Ferragamo shoes, Robert Procop jewels and long-time love Brad Pitt.

Kristen Chenoweth in Roberto Cavalli - Looking a lot like the man of the night, the diminutive star was statuesque in a perfectly-fitted golden gown.

Men (Not) In Black

Matthew McConaughey in Dolce & Gabbana - Always a risk taker on the red carpet, the Best Actor in a Leading Role winner looked dashing in a two-tone tux.

Kevin Spacey in Burberry - Navy wasn't just for the ladies on Sunday night, and Kevin Spacey expertly mixed navy and black.
