2015 Fashion Show designer spotlight: Habits of Youth by James Knipe

Combining a love for minimalism and foreign street style, James Knipe has designed and created the line Habits of Youth, a contemporary menswear brand. Bold and fashion-forward, Habits of Youth targets men who want to stand out and enhance their wardrobe while maintaining that cool, effortless attitude.

Knipe, a final-year fashion design and technology student at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, has been working hard to complete his line, which will be unveiled alongside 38 other collections at the 2015 Fashion Show, presented by Tamoda Apparel, on April 9 at the River Rock Casino.

Jacqueline McComb: Describe your collection.

JK: The name of my collection is Habits of Youth, a contemporary menswear brand that targets male consumers between the ages of 20 and 35 who are looking for more fashion-forward and unique pieces to enhance their wardrobe. The collection is based off of my love for minimalism, but it also mixes in bold details and unique prints and graphics that I’ve developed myself. The collection is for those who want to stand out while still having a cool and effortless attitude.

JM: What was the inspiration behind your collection?

JK: Last year I had the opportunity of doing a semester abroad in Helsinki, Finland. Being immersed in one of the design capitals of the world allowed me to see a whole new perspective to style, fashion, and design. The inspiration for my collection comes from Scandinavian street style, which has a lot of black and white pieces that are oversized and have a futuristic element. I loved the clean, modern architecture and art that I saw while I was over there, and a lot of those design lines and influences can be seen throughout the collection. Also, I have always loved American sportswear, so I wanted to bring the cool and modern inspiration from Scandinavia and mix it with the American sportswear influences.

JM: Describe your design/creative process.

JK: Growing up, whenever I was doing something creative I always noticed that my process was very linear and not sporadic at all. I’m someone who doesn’t like things to be hectic or unorganized, which doesn’t sound very creative; however, I like to go into a project with a pretty strong idea of the inspiration and the direction it’s going to go. As I’m creating, new things will often come up that will inspire a new design element or silhouette and then I will make the changes accordingly. I like to think that my design process is like a big funnel: I have a lot of inspirations and ideas that go in, however only a very small amount of that comes out into the final product. What does make it is a reflection of my best work that has been funneled down to create the strongest result possible.

JM: What have you learned at KPU?

JK: KPU has taught me so much that it’s hard to list out things and pinpoint them. We do a lot in our four years of the program and at the beginning you often wonder why you do some of the things you do. But then you start fourth year, everything starts to fall into place and happen naturally. KPU has taught me how to be a better designer and have a good editing eye—it’s also given me the necessary hands-on skills that cannot be taught from a textbook. I often look at other schools and see that it’s really all about the result and not how you get there; however, I’ve learned from Kwantlen that your process and the road to the result is also equally as important because you learn so much along the way to the end.

JM: What are your plans after graduation?

JK: Honestly, the truth is that I really don’t know what I plan to do after graduation. Obviously I would like to work in the industry and learn so much more from other companies and people; however, where that will be is still undecided. There are still more places in the world I’d like to see, so I would say that having the opportunity to move to another city and to be working and travelling more would be my ideal plans after graduation.
